Are Air Fryers any good? Let’s find out if air fryers are a gimmick or the real deal?
Air Fryers are getting a lot of pub these days. You’ve probably seen them advertised in store papers, or maybe featured on Amazon. Blogs about them are popping up now more than ever.
Some people are all to willing to bow to the hype and run out to buy an Air Fryer without hesitation. But you, my friend…you took the time to ask the question, “Are Air Fryers any good?”, and you deserve a good answer.
Are Air Fryers Any Good – Mixed Opinions and Reviews
Unfortunately, many of the people on the internet that are answering this question have just used an Air Fryer themselves for the first time. I don’t know how many articles I’ve read with a title along the lines of “I Just Tried The Newest Kitchen Gadget” or “Air Fryer Unboxing and Opinion”.
I’ll tell ya, I’ve been cooking with Air Fryers for over two years now. Considering how pathetic my first attempts at cooking with my Air Fryer were, I was in no place to answer that question at the time either.
Along the way though, I’ve learned how to get much better results with my Air Fryer. Now, I can honestly say that I use my Air Fryers more than any other appliance because it does so many things well.
But who needs words when I can show you proof, am I right? Check out my youtube friend Booger (a nickname she earned for being a 4’10” spitfire) making Hooters style wings right at home with her Air Fryer! (used in the video De’longhi Multifry Air Fryer, Batter Pro batter shaker)
What Kind of Food Can I Cook with an Air Fryer?
I previously mentioned that Air Fryers cook many things very well. “Like what?”, you might ask. Well, of course, Air Fryers are great for frying up a batch of french fries and chicken wings, but you can also quickly heat up snacks and leftovers.
You won’t find a better way to quickly cook your favorite frozen treats, like pizza rolls, fish sticks and poppers. The Air Fryer does an awesome job with leftover pizza or fried chicken.
There are accessories available that will allow you to even bake and grill with the Air Fryer. With a grill grate, you can grill chicken and steaks. Since the Air Fryer circulates hot air completely around your food, it does an amazing job of cooking raw meat quickly and evenly.
The baking dish accessories make it possible to bake things like brownies or cupcakes. Maybe you’d like to make small birthday cake for 3-4 people? You can do it quickly with your Air Fryer. You can make personal pan pizzas that are to die for as well!
Are Air Fryers Really A More Healthy Way to Cook?
You may have heard that you can cook with Air Fryers while using NO oil at all. This may be true if you are grilling or frying up burgers that already have a lot of grease in the meat. But if you are intending to make french fries or breaded chicken wings, you will need to use a little cooking oil.
The great news is that you can air fry with 80% less oil than you would use with a deep fryer! That means less calories and much less fat for you and your family!
I mentioned frying burgers in your Air Fryer…here’s the great thing about that. The extra grease from cooking meats like hamburger will actually drip down from the fryer basket into the tray under it, leaving you with a healthier burger than you would get from pan frying it!
Are Air Fryers Easy to Use?
When I first got my Air Fryer, I thought I could just throw in some french fries and they would come out magically delicious. I was wrong… terribley, horribly wrong. Are Air Fryers any good? Not if you don’t know how to use them!
There is a little bit of a learning curve when figuring out how to get the best results, which is to be expected when starting out with a new appliance.
Thankfully, there are only a few simple tricks to master in order to cook like an Air Fryer pro. The most important of these is to know how much oil to use, and how/when to apply it. Once you get the hang of that, the Air Fryer couldn’t be more simple to use.
Easy To Use Controls
On most digital models like the Philips XL, there are one button presets for many common foods, like french fries and fried chicken. Air Fryers with analogue dials may not feature these presets, but cooking with them is as simple as turning a dial to select your temperature, then turning a separate dial for the cooking time.
An added bonus over frying with a deep fryer is that you can actually walk away from your food as it cooks and not worry about hot grease burning the house down!
Are Air Fryers Safe for Me and My Family?
Air Fryers may be a new appliance, but the way they cook isn’t all that revolutionary. It’s really just a smarter way of using simple technology.
Air Fryers have a powerful heating element at the top of the unit which quickly heats up the air inside of the Air Fryer. A stout fan then rapidly circulates the hot air completely around your food which lays in a perforated frying basket.
The hot air that is used for cooking is then pushed through an exhaust chamber, where it is filtered and cooled, then blown out of the back of the Air Fryer. As you can see, there are no questionable processes at work here…no microwaves doing who knows what to your food! It’s just a simple yet incredibly effective way to cook.
Easy Clean up!
Nobody wants to spend a lot of time cleaning their appliances. Cleaning the stove and the microwave are always a chore. I don’t know if you have ever cleaned up after a long session with the deep fryer…forget about it!
Thankfully, cleaning up the Air Fryer is as simple as it gets. The frying basket is dishwasher safe, so you can throw that in with your pots and pans or wash it by hand in the sink. The pan under the basket will just need to be wiped out. That’s really all there is to it…easy peasy!
Affordable on Any Budget
Air Fryers come in a wide variety of prices, ranging from $60 up to $3oo. Other than quality, the biggest difference in price range is features and capacity.
Air Fryers with digital controls and presets are usually a little higher in price. While there are some high capacity Air Fryers available under $100, most of the high quality fryers that can cook for 4-5 people are in the $150 -200 range.
For those of you looking to prepare food for 2-3 people, there are a few great buys in the $70-100 range. You can check out many of these high quality Air Fryers in the Shop and Compare section.
Wrapping Things Up…
After cutting through all of the hype, Air Fryers are just a better way of cooking with existing technology and wrapping it up in a compact and functional appliance.
