Today we’ll find consider the question, “Are Air Fryers Safe?”
There’s no doubt about it, Air Fryers are a hot selling item these days. You’ve probably heard promises of healthier fried foods and cooking with up to 80% less oil than a deep fryer. That’s all fine and good, but are Air Fryers safe to use?
You’re absolutely right to put safety concerns for yourself and your family first and foremost! I’ve been using Air Fryers for a few years now, and I’d be happy to help answer your safety concerns.
Are Air Fryers Safe – Cooking With Safe Technology
Although Air Fryers are relatively new to the marketplace, they actually use simple technology that has been around for decades.
wAir Fryers use an electric stainless steel heating coil, much like the one on an electric oven range except more powerful. The coil quickly heats up the Air inside the Air Fryer anywhere from 120 -400 degrees.
The Air is then rapidly circulated around the Air Fryer by a powerful fan. The Air Fryer uses a frying basket with holes all around it (much like a deep fryer). This allows the hot air to circulate completely around your food, cooking it quickly and evenly.
The fan that Air Fryers use is so powerful that it actually pushes the hot air into the top layer of your food, giving you that crispy fried food taste and texture.
No Nasty Smells
After the super heated air is used for cooking, it enters an exhaust chamber. There, the air is filtered (removing any unpleasant odor) and cooled to a safe temperature before it exits the back of the machine.
It is important to remember to leave a good amount of space behind the Air Fryer so that the air has a free path to escape. That’s really all there is to it! The Air Fryer uses extremely safe and practical technology to cook your food.
Is Actually Using an Air Fryer Safe – No Burns or Scalds
More Safe than A Deep Fryer
Ok, so the technology behind the Air Fryer is safe, but what about the practical use of cooking with an Air Fryer? We know that cooking with a deep fryer can be extremely dangerous for a variety of reasons. Let’s look at some of the ways an Air Fryer is much more safe than a deep fryer.
Of course, deep fryers use extremely hot oil to cook food. You literally have to stand next to a deep fryer as it cooks, and even then, accidents can and do happen.
I worked inside the kitchen of a mom and pop diner for years, and I’ve seen my share of grease fires…and trust me, those suckers aren’t easy to put out. And we’ve probably all been scalded by that popping hot oil a time or two!
Air Fryers only use hot air to cook your food. There’s no chance of grease fire or scalding. You can walk away from your Air Fryer as it cooks your food and do something else, which is a great advantage over the deep fryer.
No Hot Pan Handles
Conventional oven ranges are pretty safe, but they do have a few things you have to watch out for. The heating coil is completely exposed, so you have to be mindful of not setting anything on it when it’s hot.
The whole process of cooking with an Air Fryer is completely contained. You would have to try really hard to jam your hand up into the top of the Air Fryer to get burned by the heating coil. Are Air Fryers safe?
I’m sure we’ve all had our share of burns from a hot pan handle, both as adults and kids!
The outside of the Air Fryer stays relatively cool. It gets warm of course, but not hot enough to burn at a touch…which is nice to know if you have kiddies running around. Most Air Fryers (certainly the ones I’d recommend) have cool touch handles for the fryer basket as well. So you can leave your oven mitts in the drawer.
The only real surface you have to watch out for is inside the Air Fryer basket itself. That area gets extremely hot, and it’s best to keep your hands free of that area. Thankfully, there’s no good reason to put your hand inside there anyway!
Use an Air Fryer Instead of a Microwave
I have to be honest, I hate microwaves. Who knows what those waves of radiation are doing to your food. Aside from the health concerns, you get terrible results from them. Microwaves may be quick, but everything comes out soggy, unevenly cooked and gross. Ugh!
Luckily, the Air Fryer is a great alternative to the Microwave. You can heat up snacks for the family knowing that they aren’t being subjected to questionable microwaves. Also, the food will be crispy and thoroughly cooked. I love heating up leftover pizza in the Air Fryer…it comes out as good as it was when it came out of the oven!
Do yourself a favor and forget about that microwave. They’re a pain to clean anyway! My microwave is starting to miss me and I think it’s looking a little sad.
Safety Features That You’ll Love
Here’s where cooking with an Air Fryer really stands out in terms of safety. Most Air Fryers feature an automatic shut off timer. You can set the timer and just go about your business.
If you accidently forget that you’re cooking something (it happens to the best of us) all you will end up with is cold food! No need to worry about burning the house down.
Have you ever pulled something out of the oven and forgot to turn the oven itself off? Full disclosure – it’s a once a month occurrence for me. No need to worry about that with the Air Fryer.
Air Fryers shut off automatically when the fryer basket is pulled out, and they start back up when you put it back in (if there is time left on the timer).
