Can you cook fish in an air fryer? We’ll explore 5 easy methods of cooking air fried fish.
If you love eating fish, you probably know that it can be one of the most healthy sources of protein available, with the added benefit of heart healthy omega-3 fatty acids. Much of the health benefit of fish comes from the way it is prepared. Perhaps you already know that Air Frying is a much healthier alternative to deep frying, but can you cook fish in an air fryer?
Can You Cook Fish in an Air Fryer?
Absolutely you can! I cooked in a diner for years, and among my favorite dishes was fried fish. Of course, fish isn’t so healthy when your cooking it in a tub of boiling grease! After I bought my first Air Fryer, it wasn’t long before I asked myself “can you cook fish in an Air Fryer”? Now that I think about it, that was almost 4 years ago. (time flies doesn’t it?)
I’m still using my Air Fryers…still loving them, and fried fish is always on the menu! I’ve used several different brands of Air Fryers and I never miss a chance to talk to my friends about theirs and whether they like it or not.
If you’re wondering which Air Fryer is the best for cooking fish (and just about anything else really), I can absolutely tell you that the De’Longhi Multi-Fry is the way to go. I personally own it, and it’s given me many years of trouble free Air Frying bliss! There’s a great video a little further down showing you exactly how to cook fish in the De’Longhi.
Frying Fish in the Air Fryer
Air fryers are great at frying dry battered food to perfection, and fish is no different. All you will need is a couple of eggs, 1/2 cup of flour, a box of seafood breading, and your choice of fish. First you need to preheat the Air Fryer at it’s highest setting.
In a large bowl, whip up the eggs with just a little milk added to thin them out. Now dip the fish in flour, and then give the fish a quick bath in the egg mixture. Next, cover the fish with your sea food batter.
There is an awesome little gadget called the Batter Pro shaker that can make quick work of anything you like to batter. I use mine all the time. But, back to the recipe. Now it’s time to cook your fish.
Spray the bottom of your Air Fryer basket with cooking oil and carefully place your fish into the basket. Spray a littlecooking oil onto the top surface of the fish. After 5 minutes of cooking time, check the fish to make sure it’s cooking evenly. You may want to flip your fish depending on how well your Air Fryer circulates air (they all work a little differently). Spray any white patches of breading with cooking oil.
After 10-12 minutes your fish should be crispy on the outside, and warm and delicious in the middle! Here is a quick video to show you just how easy it is to fry up some fish in an Air Fryer. In this video, Boog uses a De’longhi MultiFry Air Fryer and a Batter Pro shaker.
Broiling Fish (Tuna, Salmon, Tilapia)
Broiling is a delicious and healthy way to prepare fish. Tuna, Tilapia, and Salmon are particularly wonderful when broiled. The Air Fryer does a wonderful job of broiling fish, and it’s really simple to do!
When broiling fish, we really just want to cook slim cuts of fish from the top down. If you have a grill attachment, cover it with tin foil so your fish won’t fall through the gaps in the grill. If you don’t have a grill accessory, just place a sheet of tin foil inside or your Air Fryer’s basket.
Preheat your oven on it’s highest setting. Spray a little canola oil onto the tin foil, and lay the fish directly onto it. Go ahead and give the fish a light spritzing of canola oil. Broiling fish should only take 5-10 minutes. When done correctly, your fish should flake easily with a fork.
If you have a grill rack accessory for your Air Fryer, well guess what…you’ve got yourself a fish grillin’ machine! You might want to choose grilling over broiling if you prefer your fish a little more well done on all sides. Of course, Salmon is great on the grill, but Swordfish is particularly amazing when grilled. Can you cook fish in an Air Fryer?
Grilling in an Air Fryer is extremely simple. Preheat your Air Fryer to 350F (or 3-3.5 on the dial). Spritz a little canola oil on both sides of your fish and lay it on the grill. The Air Fryer should do a good job of cooking both sides but you may want to flip the fish once just to make sure the bottom is cooking well. After 10-15 minutes, your fish should be ready.
Pan Frying – Seared Tuna
Searing fish is a method of cooking where you want to quickly cook the outside layer of the fish, leaving the middle somewhat raw. You could say this is the equivalent of a burger on he grill cooked meat rare-medium rare. You will need an Air Fryer pan accessory to pan fry, but that pan will come in handy when you want to bake as well!
Start by seasoning your Tuna steaks with a little salt and cayenne pepper, or whatever you prefer. Put a teaspoon of butter and oil in your pan and add some fresh peppercorns. Go ahead and preheat your Air Fryer with the pan inside so that butter and oil can heat up. After about 5 minutes, those peppercorns will be cracking and you can carefully slide your Tuna onto the pan. Can you cook fish in an air fryer?
When searing Tuna, you’ll only want to cook each side 2-3 minutes. If you prefer your fish a little more well done, you can cook it a little longer.
Fish tacos are a great idea when you’re in the mood for something just a little different. Of course, there are many ways you can prepare your fish tacos.
