Air Fryers have certainly been gaining popularity lately. Perhaps you’ve heard that with an Air Fryer, you can “fry” food without using oil. Sounds too good to be true, right? I’ve been cooking with Air Fryers for a few years now, and I would love to help you find out if an Air Fryer can help you eat healthier. Is an Air Fryer Healthy.

Just a quick disclaimer. Air Fryers are only as healthy for you as the food you put in them. This article is meant for those who are looking for a healthier way to eat the foods they already enjoy eating.

If you are looking at implementing a very strict freshly prepared raw vegetable and lean protein diet, I honestly don’t think an Air Fryer would be a great asset to you, as you’ll be eating uncooked (or low heat cooked) food.

The Fried Food Fiasco Is an Air Fryer Healthy?

I don’t know about you, but I have an appetite for fried foods. I worked as a cook in a restaurant for several years, and had daily access to a deep fryer…very dangerous. You can trust me when I tell you that I know better than most what fried food can do to your health. In those days, I was 215pds at 5’10”, not exactly where I wanted to be with my health.

It’s not surprising that fried foods blow you up like a balloon when you look at the facts. All of that extra oil used for cooking adds a lot of fat and calories to your food. On top of that, there are countless additives that restaurants use in their food. Of course, most of us don’t go to a fast food restaurant just for fries, and the bad decisions just keep piling on. Don’t feel bad, I’ve been there.

Well, I got a different job and started making better food choices. I’m not a health nut or guru, and I still enjoy many of the foods I use to. However, I eat less of those foods and I prepare them in the healthiest way possible. Is an Air Fryer healthy?

The Air Fryer allows me to do just that, enjoy the foods I like to eat in the healthiest way I can. I’m happy to say that today, I maintain a healthy weight (around 165 pounds). Let’s check out how an Air Fryers do what they do!


A Healthier Way to Fry

Most of us enjoy fried foods now and then, but we understand that the fried foods we get from restaurants are loaded with extra fat from the oil and salt for flavoring. Wouldn’t it be nice if we could eat fried foods now and then that were cooked in a healthier way than dropping them in a vat of boiling oil? This is the idea behind the Air an air fryer healthy

Although Air Fryers have only been developed within the last decade, they use very simple and safe technology. A powerful stainless steel heating element generates super-heated hot air, which is then rapidly circulated around the interior of the machine. It’s the rapid circulation of up to 400f degrees that makes a crispy and browned layer on the top of your food.

The pan used within the Air Fryer is fairly similar to a fryer basket, allowing the hot air to completely circulate around your food. This means that your food is cooked quickly and evenly. The hot air that is used for cooking is then cooled in an exhaust chamber and then forced out from the back of the machine by a fan.

So, do Air Fryers use oil to fry food? The simple answer is that Air Fryers use less oil than a deep fryer to fry food…up to 80% less oil in fact. This use of less oil results in healthier fried foods than you would get from deep fried foods in restaurants. Let’s take a look at just how much healthier air fried food is compared to deep fried food. 

The Bottom Line – Comparing Deep Fried Food To Air Fried Food

As previously stated, you can cook a lot of your favorite fried foods in an air fryer with much healthier results than deep fried food. Let’s check out just how much healthier a serving of Air Fried French fries is compared to McDonald’s French Fries.

McDonald’s medium fries contain 340 Calories, 16 grams of fat, 44 grams of carbohydrates, and 230 milligrams of sodium (salt). The list of ingredients are: Potatoes, Vegetable Oil (Canola Oil, Corn Oil, Soybean Oil, Hydrogenated Soybean Oil, Natural Beef Flavor [Wheat and Milk Derivatives]*), Dextrose, Sodium Acid Pyrophosphate (Maintain Color), Salt. *Natural beef flavor contains hydrolyzed wheat and hydrolyzed milk as starting ingredients. That’s straight from McD’s website kids! Is an Air Fryer healthy?

A one potato serving size of Air Fried Fries contains 176 Calories, 4.5 grams of fat, and 31.5 grams of carbohydrates. Ingredients are subject to what you cook with but typically you’ll have potatoes, cooking oil, and salt. No guess work involved.

We can see now that Air Fried fries have about half the calories of deep fried fries and much less fat. On top of the base nutritional facts, you know exactly what you are putting in your food and how fresh the ingredients are.

Another advantage the Air Fryer has over deep fryers is that you can do so much more with them! Let’s take a quick look at what you can do with an Air Fryer aside from frying.

Grilling with the Air Fryer

Because the Air Fryer circulates hot air all around the food (not just from the bottom), Air Fryers do a great job of quickly grilling food. You don’t need to use any oil when grilling with the Air Fryer. All you need is a small grill rack to raise the food up off of the basket and you can grill steak, chicken, fish, and delicious an air fryer healthy

If you want to make up a quick easy bake cake or a small batch of cookies, you can do that in an Air Fryer. There are even pizza pans available for the Air Fryer that will let you make hand tossed pizzas right in your Air Fryer!
